An Integral Part of the Curriculum
Our visual and performing arts program is an
essential component of our whole curriculum.
Visual and performing arts classes are core
academic courses that give students the
opportunity to explore different forms of
creative self-expression through studentcentered teaching and hands-on learning.
Students all take a visual and performing arts
class each year through 11th grade, and may
choose to take studio classes in 12th grade.
The Impact of Studying the Arts
Through engagement with an artistic
discipline, students practice organizing and
developing concepts and then re昀椀ning, reengaging, and bringing their ideas to fruition.
As members of an artistic community,
students observe and give feedback to each
other, perceiving and analyzing work while
offering each other support. Student artists are
challenged to engage deeply in their work as
they develop 昀氀uency, con昀椀dence, and skills.
Presenting and Performing
Conveying meaning through the presentation
of artistic work is part of the artistic process.
Visual and performing arts students regularly
present their work through performances and
concerts, exhibitions, and events. By engaging
with the community outside the classroom,
students showcase work that has required
conceptual thinking, engagement in multiple
rehearsals or drafts, and consideration of
context.
Hands-on Teachers
Our visual and performing arts teachers are
practitioners in their 昀椀eld: potters, musicians,
actors/directors, writers, and designers. As
practicing artists, they inspire our students by
working alongside them and modeling their
own approaches to the creative process. They
design classroom spaces where students
actively work and engage with each other.
