SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE VI
In Spanish Language and Culture VI, students further
enhance their linguistic skills in listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Students concentrate on selfexpression, re昀椀ning vocabulary and grammar, and
gaining a profound understanding of the history,
literature, and culture of the Spanish-speaking
world. In this immersive learning environment,
students engage with such topics as: the
Spanish Civil War, “muralismo”, social issues, the
environment, literary movements, and debates on
the impact of technology in our society. Students
analyze short stories by canonical writers such as
Julio Cortazar and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as well
as relevant cultural 昀椀lms. The study of these topics
regularly involves in-class discussions and debates
led by either the teacher or students, essay writing,
oral presentations, and creative projects.
Prerequisite: Spanish Language and Culture V
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12.
SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE VII
In Spanish Language and Culture VII, students
develop advanced techniques for interpreting
authentic literary and cultural texts from the
Spanish-speaking world. Students re昀椀ne their
abilities in crafting both creative and analytical
pieces with an emphasis on advanced
communication skills. Topics covered include: art
and identity, architecture and history, signi昀椀cant
women in Latin American history, memory and
dictatorship in the Southern Cone, creative writing,
and magical realism in literature and 昀椀lm. Students
in Spanish VII read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Doce
Cuentos Peregrinos, and watch culturally relevant
昀椀lms. Study of these topics involves in-class
discussions and debates led by either the teacher
or students, essay writing, oral presentations, and
creative projects.
