WORLD LANGUAGES
SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
Once students reach level V, they embark on the study of Spanish Language and Culture. These courses
take the form of a humanities-style seminar, offering a multidisciplinary approach to explore the Spanish
language and Hispanic cultures. Emphasis is placed on re昀椀ning linguistic skills, fostering critical thinking,
and deepening cultural understanding. Through collaborative projects and interactive assignments
students apply their language skills in real-world scenarios. Students are expected to use the target
language for all class purposes.
SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE V
In Spanish Language and Culture V, students use
the language structures they have previously
learned to communicate in more spontaneous and
organic discussions, adding complexity to express
their opinions. Throughout the course, students
delve into cultural topics, engage in discussions
on complex ideas, draw comparisons between
their own communities and Spanish-speaking
ones, and use Spanish in real-life scenarios. Topics
covered include traditions across diverse Hispanic
cultures, immigration and identity, written media,
the signi昀椀cance of extracurricular activities, and the
educational systems within the Spanish-speaking
world. Students read Cajas de cartón, a short novel
that describes the life of a Mexican migrant family,
and watch and discuss culturally relevant 昀椀lms such
as “Diarios de motocicleta” to further enhance their
understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures and
societies.
Prerequisite: Spanish IV
