SPANISH III
¿Te animas a viajar a través del tiempo y las
culturas? In this course students immerse
themselves in the vibrant cultures of the Spanishspeaking world through authentic materials and
experiences such as music, recipes, videos, and 昀椀eld
trips. Spanish III offers rich opportunities for students
to enhance their listening, speaking, reading, and
writing skills. The primary focus is on self-expression
and moving from a novice to an intermediate
level of communication. Students engage in
dynamic learning experiences, including group
discussions, using complex grammar, and exploring
the traditions and cultures of Spanish-speaking
countries—all designed to enhance language
pro昀椀ciency. Each unit is thoughtfully structured
around cultural topics, incorporating assessments
and capstone projects that include creating a book
about their childhood, learning and teaching the
basic steps of a Hispanic dance, learning to cook
authentic recipes, and interviewing native speakers
from the Field School community. Teachers use the
target language for all class purposes.
Prerequisite: Spanish II
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12,
or by permission of the department chair
SPANISH IV
“Algunos quieren cambiar el mundo. Pocos quieren
cambiarse a si mismos.” Like characters in the
昀椀lm También la lluvia, students in this class learn
more about themselves and the world around
them as they delve deeper into their language
studies. In Spanish IV, students communicate in
Spanish at an intermediate to beginning-advanced
level. They work to understand the values that are
represented by cultural practices and historical
narratives, interact in a wide variety of complex
contexts, deepen understanding of cultural texts,
and create dialogues, short stories, Public Service
Announcements, and travel brochures about the
past, present, future, and hypothetical situations.
In continuing to access cultural knowledge, they
reinforce their understanding of other content areas
and their own native language and culture. Through
student-centered, project-based learning, students
gain greater ownership of and interest in the
material. As they re昀椀ne their ability to express their
ideas coherently, resourcefully, and with reasonable
昀氀uency and accuracy in spoken and written Spanish,
students explore themes related to shopping,
nature, health and healthy routines, storytelling, and
travel and budgeting. The teacher uses the target
language for all class purposes.
Prerequisite: Spanish III
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12.
