WORLD LANGUAGES
FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
Once students reach level V, they begin an advanced-level study of French Language and Culture. Each
of these courses continues to develop students’ language pro昀椀ciency through immersive activities and
thematic exploration in literature, history, and culture. Emphasis is placed on re昀椀ning linguistic skills,
fostering critical thinking, and deepening cultural understanding. Through collaborative projects and
interactive assignments students apply their language skills in real-world scenarios. Students are expected
to use the target language for all class purposes.
FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE V
The French Language and Culture V course allows
students to further develop their communicative
competence in French and deepen their
understanding of Francophone cultures. Through
study of authentic texts, 昀椀ction and non昀椀ction, and
audio-visual materials from the 16th century to
the present day, students develop critical reading
skills, increase their knowledge of French grammar,
and re昀椀ne their written and oral expression. They
engage in interactive activities covering a wide
range of topics, such as impressionist art, poetry of
Pléiade, written media, higher education, and the
New Wave in French cinema. Students compare

and contrast cultural practices and perspectives
of various French-speaking countries, present their
research on course topics in verbal and written
formats, and read and analyze important pieces of
literature, including excerpts from Albert Camus’s
The Stranger, and Irene Némirovsky’s
Le Bal.
Prerequisite: French IV
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12.
