FRENCH II
Venez passez la journée avec nous! How do I
communicate about my daily life experiences,
and how do they compare to those of French
speakers? In this course, students continue to
solidify their essential language skills, build the
fundamental vocabulary and structures they
need to communicate daily life experiences, and
become familiar with some detailed elements
of Francophone culture. Students communicate
in short, basic sentences in the present tense
and then describe daily routines in the past and
the near future. Students demonstrate oral and
written skills through interpretive reading and
listening, interpersonal speaking and writing, and
presentational writing and speaking activities.
Topics include daily activities, school life, pastimes
and hobbies, directions, and shopping. Many cultural
readings and authentic materials connect students
to various aspects of everyday life in the Frenchspeaking world. Students create and describe their
ideal schools, research markets around the Frenchspeaking world, and conduct oral exchanges related
to purchases and weekend activities.
Prerequisite: French I
Note: This course is open to students in grades 7-12.
FRENCH III
Voyage, voyages, in昀椀niment! How do we travel
through time and cultures? French III provides
students with rich opportunities to expand their
listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
The focus is on self-expression and reaching an
adequate degree of pro昀椀ciency in communication.
Group discussions, complex grammar, tenses (past,
present, and future), connecting and transition
words, and short literary texts contribute to the
development of student language skills in their
target language. Further, the course aims to expand
each student’s awareness of the cultures of the
French-speaking world through the use of authentic
materials like music, 昀椀lms, readings, and projects.
Major units include summer holidays, childhood
experiences, gastronomy, travel, technology, and
social media. Throughout the course, teachers use
the target language, ensuring an immersive and
effective learning experience.
Prerequisite: French II
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12,
or by permission of the department chair.
FRENCH IV
On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur! L’essentiel
est invisible avec les yeux. Like The Little Prince
whom French IV students meet at the end of their
coursework, students in this course learn more
about themselves and the world around them
as they delve deeper into their language studies.
In this class, students communicate in French at
an intermediate to beginning-advanced level.
They work to understand the values represented
by cultural practices and historical narratives,
interact in a wide variety of complex contexts,
deepen understanding of cultural texts, and create
dialogues and short stories using past, present,
future, and hypothetical situations. In continuing to
build and access cultural knowledge, students grow
in their knowledge of other content areas and their
own native language and culture. Through studentcentered, project-based learning, participants
develop ownership of and interest in the material.
Students explore themes related to health and
healthy routines, storytelling, spending habits,
French Polynesian art and the novel Le Petit Prince.
Throughout the course, teachers use the target
language for all class purposes.
Prerequisite: French III
Note: This course is open to students in grades 9-12.
