MUSIC FOUNDATIONS
Have you ever played in a band? How can we work collaboratively to develop
and re昀椀ne individual musicianship? How do we express creativity through
music? This course provides students of all levels the opportunity to build skills
through a detailed exploration of music performance, creation, and production.
Students establish and develop musical techniques, both as individuals and
as an ensemble, in preparation for live performances throughout the year. The
inclusion of student-selected material allows the class to engage in music that
participants 昀椀nd meaningful while gaining working experience in the elements
of melody, rhythm, chordal harmony, tonal concept, and musical form. Students
of differing skill levels work together to record and mix both live performances
and studio sessions. Creative projects push Field students to 昀椀nd their “voice”
as well-rounded, 21st-century musicians by synthesizing instrumental/vocal
performances with industry-standard production software like GarageBand and
Ableton Live. The Music Foundations course builds towards students performing
at Field community events and exhibiting/releasing student-generated work in
other formats. It also gives students limited access to the campus music facility,
including a professional 16-channel, multi-track recording studio.
