ceramics. Students explore alternative construction techniques and create increasingly
complex and challenging forms, practicing analyzing an object and breaking it down
into smaller components. The class emphasizes conceptual exploration and individual
artistic development - how can we design objects that communicate a story, purpose,
or personal expression? Students explore sources for ideas expressed in the work by
examining their personal histories and artistic identities as well as critiques and analyses
of contemporary artists. Students continue to develop their studio habits as they become
leaders in the community space, and learn how to prepare their work for presentation and
display. Through practice, critique, collaboration, experimentation, and re昀氀ection, students
gain a deeper understanding of three-dimensional design and create their own unique
work.
Prerequisite: 3D Foundations or department chair approval. This class may be repeated.
Each year in the class is a unique experience.
DIGITAL FOUNDATIONS
How do you use digital software to create a compelling design? This course introduces
students to conceptual thinking and visual problem solving through the creation of
graphic design for print media, social media, 昀椀lmmaking, and animation. Using Adobe
Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, iMovie, Premiere Pro, and Animate, students develop
common practices of design thinking, designing for a purpose, and critiquing conceptual
and commercial art. By the end of this course, students understand and can practice the
skills that create good design in posters, advertisements, product and logo design, and
social media platforms. They learn how to develop a brand identity, manipulate original
digital photography, utilize typographical resources, and express visual ideas in multiple
digital formats. Beyond this, students learn the fundamentals of 昀椀lmmaking practices
and theory, as well as animation and character design. Students also explore the ubiquity
of design in contemporary life and investigate the various ways in which cultural
identity is expressed through design in advertising, social media, and all around us
at all times.
STUDIO
DIGITAL CONCENTRATION: FILMMAKING
How do you tell a story with moving pictures? In this course, students examine
ways to produce visual storytelling, focusing primarily on 昀椀lmmaking and
animation. The class investigates other forms of visual storytelling such as
animatics, comics, and gaming. Students learn how to produce original 昀椀lms and
animations from script to 昀椀nal production, while studying genres of 昀椀lmmaking
- traditional and contemporary, conventional and experimental. As creators,
members of the class learn practices in pre-production, production, and
post-production while developing skills in screenwriting, storyboarding, sound
recording, and visual and audio editing. They ultimately learn how to package
and promote their 昀椀nal product. By the end of the year, students create an original
昀椀lm embracing one area of interest. Artists share their work with our community
on Studio Day and at our annual Film Festival screening.
Prerequisite: Digital Foundations or department chair approval. This course may
