2024-2025 Course Flipbook v2 - Flipbook - Page 62
UPPER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Our upper school studio program allows students to investigate multiple disciplines
while providing paths toward specialization and concentration. Courses designated as
“Foundations” are prerequisites for any course established as a “Concentration” unless
given approval by the department chair through a portfolio review process. Courses
designated as Foundations can only be taken once, while courses designated as
Concentrations can be taken multiple times. In addition to our regular course offerings,
upper school students have the opportunity to engage with other arts programming
during our electives and Intersession program.
2D FOUNDATIONS
STUDIO
How do artists communicate ideas? Students of all skill levels are introduced to the
essential techniques and vocabulary needed to take an idea and bring it to fruition as
a completed work of art. Working with key visual elements such as linear perspective,
proportion, color theory, and composition, students create expressive works of art that
are rooted in personal experience. Regular drawing practice reinforces skill growth and
emphasizes the importance of revising and re昀椀ning work. The course challenges students
to 昀椀ll their sketchbooks with diverse imagery through a range of drawing prompts
including observational, interpretive, and imaginative. Students then re昀氀ect on their
artistic choices via self-assessment and critique. They create artist statements to practice
using the elements of art and principles of design in their writing. By the end of their time
in 2D Foundations, students may choose to continue with 2D studies at the Concentration
level.
