MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM
Our middle school studio program provides students with a foundation in the visual and
performing arts in 6th grade, then allows students to investigate core disciplines in 7th
and 8th. In addition to our regular course offerings, middle school students may have the
opportunity to engage with additional arts programming during our electives sessions.
FOUNDATIONS IN ART & DESIGN
STUDIO
How can we use art and design to better understand and interpret our world? How do
artists build rewarding studio habits and communicate effectively through their
artwork? In Foundations in Art and Design, 6th grade students investigate a variety
of studio disciplines, including 2D and 3D art, music, photography, digital art, and
theater, as they work in a collaborative studio space and practice creative norms
and routines. Using the elements of art and principles of design as a framework,
6th-grade artists create hands-on projects illuminating the connections between
visual and performing arts, design, and STEM. By learning a common design
language, students begin identifying and articulating their personal aesthetics
and artistic interests. Participation in exhibitions and in-person visits to area
museums allow us to consider how art can convey meaning and how it may be
shared with the public. In May, students celebrate their work and learning with a
year-end exhibition of their accomplishments.
All 6th grade students take this course.
2D ART
How does art describe the human experience? 2D Art students explore a variety
of 2D art media and processes in this foundational course. Through the practice
of traditional subjects, such as the still-life, human 昀椀gure, portrait, and depiction
of landscape and the natural world, students learn to work responsibly in a
studio environment while handling various tools and materials. Projects draw
