SENIOR SEMINAR : TONI MORRISON
“Fiction has never been entertainment for me,” asserts Toni Morrison in the audio
version of her Nobel prize acceptance speech. What, then, is the work of her
昀椀ction? What evolutions can we see in her writing (structure, style, themes, and
content) over the course of her career? How do her interviews, her own words,
and the scholarly research on her work impact the reading of her work? How do
personal insights and arguments engage with and contribute to the scholarship
on her work? What is the impact/legacy of Toni Morrison’s canon and why should
future generations read her work? In this course, students develop reading,
thinking, writing, research, and presentation skills bene昀椀cial beyond the classroom.
